Arctic Grayling – High Flying Fun!

I really didn’t have huge expectation for the opportunity to fish Grayling in Northwest Territories at Frontier Fishing Lodge last Summer.   The first one I caught would be my personal best.  The lodges said bring an ultra light rod and a few small Mepps or Blue Fox.  I had no idea how much fun these little guys would be!

Since they mentioned fly fishing for them I thought a cool little spinner I found on the Mepps site might be fun.  They are called Spin Flies.  They come in Hackle Dressed / Wooly Worm / Black Fury.  Since I wanted a lure to replicate the bugs that would be floating around the river I choose the Wooly worm type.  They look something like the pictures below.

Wooly Worm

These tiny lures work great.  I just asked my guide which color would be best.  They easily caught fish in the rivers and the lake.  Basically anywhere in the lake you can catch these gorgeous fish.  One of my favorite activities was catching fish while my guide prepared lunch.

The only downside of my Grayling fishing was I didn’t really pursue these super fun mini Sailfish of the North until my trip was half over.  Next time I won’t make that mistake again!  If you get a chance to fish these guys grab a few small spinners and give it a shot.
